ISSUES
| Job Creation and Economic Development |
 |
Representitve Don Calloway is a lawyer in the St. Louis area. He has worked with some of the region's largest companies, encouraging them to relocate or expand to St. Louis County. His goal is to create stable high paying jobs in our community.
As a State Representative, Don Calloway worked with Governor Nixon to write the 2009 Quality Job Creation Act. Known as the "Jobs Bill," this act sparked the growth of high-paying jobs throughout Missouri. It also helped close corporate tax loopholes, and created new investment in Urban Recovery Zones such as Wellston and North Park. The North Park development is now home to Express Scripts and also has a Staples corporate office.
Represenative Calloway will work to bring more stable office and labor jobs to our community. |
| Healthcare |
 |
Representative Don Calloway understands that every member of the family should have afforable healthcare options. That's why he will work to increase Medicaid funding, so working parents can afford insurance premiums for their children, while still being able to pay the bills. He will also fight to freeze prescription drug costs for Senior Citizens on a fixed income. Finally, because health is a lifelong pursuit, Don Calloway wants to make sure that quality prenatal care is avalible for pregant women, as well as ongoing coverage for young children. |
| Education |
 |
"Education is a better safegaurd of liberty than a standing army," said Edward Everett. Represenatative Don Calloway agrees. He supports public education, and has fought to improve public schools in St. Louis County. Don Calloway believes in increased teacher pay and alternative cirriculums such as job training to better prepare our children for the workforce.
In 2010, Representative Don Calloway created the Normandy High School Carpenters Apprenticeship Program. Students in the program will graduate with a high school diploma and credits towards an Associates Degree in Carpentry. They will also be on the way towards their Journeyman's card with the local Carpenters' Union. Don Calloway would like to to see the expansion of programs such as this, as well as those training students to work in growing service industries. |

Working For Progress |
 |
Representative Calloway has worked diligently for the progressive
causes and values that will help the people of his District, and
throughout the state. Don has been a major advocate of health care
reform, calling for lower costs and expanded Medicaid coverage. Don
has vigorously supported working families, advocating for their right
to collectively bargain and earn equal pay. Don has marshaled
resources and encouraged activism to help the Normandy School
District. As State Senator, Don will continue his proactive
involvement in state and local issues, and refuse to allow government
to engage in “politics as usual” while ignoring the needs of the
people. He will work with energy and enthusiasm for the progressive
causes that will help move the District forward. |

Fighting For Reform |
 |
Representative Calloway has been an active leader in the fight for
reform. When corruption within the Northeast Ambulance and Fire
District threatened the community, Don refused to stand by and instead
challenged the entrenched forces who were abusing their power and
wasting millions of tax dollars. In St. Louis County, Don filed and
argued a lawsuit that successfully prevented several corrupt officials
from lining their pockets with over $750,000 of public funds. In
Jefferson City, Don created legislation that will reform the structure
of fire district boards so that this abuse of power cannot happen
again. Don’s stand against corruption has been described by the St.
Louis Post Dispatch as a “crusade to reform the troubled agency,” and
respected Post –Dispatch columnist Bill McClellan commended Don as the
“one heroic public official” who took action to prevent corrupt
officials from seizing public funds and taking advantage of residents. |

Serving Our Community |
 |
Don is a lifelong resident of the District. After graduating college
and law school Don returned to home to give back to the community that
has given him so much. Don volunteers regularly for charity
organizations such as the Matthews-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club, and
frequently conducts pro bono work through his law practice. In the
Missouri State House, Don supported service by sponsoring legislation
to aid overworked public defenders who serve indigent clients. In the
District, Don encouraged community engagement and rallied resources to
help the Normandy School system. His lifelong ties to the community
make him a strong advocate of the issues he knows are important to the
people of the District. As Senator, Don will work vigorously both in
the Capital and at home to support service and inspire those around
him to do the same. |
